ATEX Lighting: 7 Essential Checks for Hazardous Areas

Reviewed by the Daly Middle East technical team — application engineers specialising in ATEX/IECEx hazardous-area lighting and instrumentation.

Choosing ATEX lighting is a safety decision as well as a lighting decision. The fixture must suit the classified area, the possible gas or dust atmosphere, the ambient temperature and the way the installation will be inspected and maintained. A bright lamp with the wrong protection concept is not a compliant solution.

The European Commission describes ATEX equipment as equipment and protective systems intended for potentially explosive atmospheres. IECEx provides a separate international conformity-assessment framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres. For a project in the UAE or wider GCC, the correct route depends on the project specification, authority requirements and the certification accepted by the end user.

Daly Middle East supplies hazardous-area and industrial lighting for UAE and GCC projects. Use this guide to build a sensible specification before you compare products, quotations or lead times. This atex lighting guide keeps the selection process focused on documented application requirements.

ATEX lighting: What ATEX lighting is designed to control

An ATEX light is designed so that its electrical and thermal characteristics do not create an unacceptable ignition risk in the atmosphere for which it is approved. The protection method may involve a flameproof enclosure, increased safety, intrinsic safety or another recognised concept. The product certificate and marking identify the limits of that protection.

That is why the word “explosion-proof” on a sales page is not enough. Ask for the certificate, equipment marking, gas or dust group, temperature class, ambient range and instructions for installation.

  • Area classification and zone
  • Gas, vapour, mist or dust group
  • Temperature class and ambient range
  • Ingress protection and corrosion resistance
  • Cable entries, glands and termination requirements

How to match a light to the hazardous area

Start with the area classification supplied by the responsible engineer or site owner. A Zone 0, Zone 1 or Zone 2 gas area has a different equipment selection logic from a Zone 20, Zone 21 or Zone 22 dust area. Do not select a fitting from a generic zone label without checking the complete marking.

Then consider the job the light must perform. A fixed linear fitting, high bay, floodlight, emergency fitting, portable handlamp and helideck light solve different problems. Beam spread, mounting height, glare, maintenance access and emergency operation matter as much as lumen output.

The documents to request before purchase

A responsible quotation should make the compliance path easy to audit. Request the certificate or certificate reference, datasheet, installation instructions, dimensional drawing, wiring information and details of any accessories included in the approval.

Check whether the certification applies to the complete luminaire or only to a component. Also confirm that cable glands, plugs, junction boxes and mounting accessories are compatible with the selected protection concept.

Where Daly Middle East can help

Daly’s existing ATEX lighting guide explains the wider relationship between zones, certification and product selection. You can also review the explosion-proof lighting range before sending your zone classification and project requirements.

For a project-specific recommendation, share the area classification, supply voltage, mounting arrangement, ambient temperature, required light distribution and applicable approval with the Daly Middle East team through the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Is ATEX the same as IECEx?

No. ATEX is a European legislative framework, while IECEx is an international certification system. A project may specify one or both, so check the purchaser’s requirement.

Can any LED light be used in a hazardous area?

No. LED technology does not remove the need for suitable hazardous-area certification and correct installation.

What information should I send for a quotation?

Send the zone, gas or dust group, temperature class, ambient range, voltage, mounting method, lighting task and required certification.
