What Is ATEX Lighting? Zones, Certification & Buying Guide
If your site handles flammable gases, vapours or combustible dust, standard light fittings are a real ignition risk. What Does ATEX Mean?
ATEX comes from the French ATmosphere EXplosible and refers to two EU directives that govern equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres. An ATEX-certified light fitting has been independently tested to confirm it cannot become an ignition source — through sparking, arcing, or exceeding a safe surface temperature — in the environment it is rated for.
Hazardous Area Zones Explained
Before specifying any fitting, you need to know the zone classification of the area it will be installed in:
- Zone 0 — explosive gas atmosphere present continuously or for long periods.
- Zone 1 — explosive gas atmosphere likely to occur during normal operation.
- Zone 2 — explosive gas atmosphere not likely during normal operation, and if it occurs, only briefly.
- Zone 20 — combustible dust cloud present continuously or for long periods.
- Zone 21 — combustible dust cloud likely to occur during normal operation.
- Zone 22 — combustible dust cloud not likely during normal operation, occurring only briefly if at all.
A fitting rated for Zone 1 will also cover Zone 2 requirements, but not the reverse — always match the fixture to the highest-risk zone on site, and confirm this with your HSE or engineering team before ordering.
ATEX vs IECEx: What’s the Difference?
ATEX certification applies within the European Union. IECEx is the equivalent international scheme, widely accepted across the GCC, and often requested alongside or instead of ATEX on regional oil & gas and petrochemical projects. What to Check Before You Buy
- Zone and gas/dust group — the fitting must be rated for your exact zone and material group.
- Temperature class (T-rating) — the maximum surface temperature the fitting can reach must stay below the ignition temperature of the gases present.
- IP rating — IP66/IP67 is standard for outdoor, marine or washdown environments.
- Certification body — confirm the ATEX/IECEx certificate is current and covers the specific model, not just the product family.
- Mounting and fixture type — floodlight, linear, high bay, portable or emergency, matched to the area layout.

Is ATEX the same as explosion-proof?
They’re closely related. “Explosion-proof” is a general term for equipment designed to contain ignition; ATEX and IECEx are the specific certification schemes that prove a fitting meets that requirement.
Do I need ATEX or IECEx, or both?
It depends on the project specification and destination market. GCC projects frequently request IECEx, ATEX, or both — check your project documentation or ask our team to confirm.
What zone rating do most GCC oil & gas sites require?
Zone 1 and Zone 2 are the most common for gas-risk areas, with Zone 21/22 used where combustible dust is present. Your site’s hazardous area classification study will specify the exact zone.
Can I use a Zone 2 fitting in a Zone 1 area?
No. A fitting must be rated for the zone it is installed in or higher — a Zone 1-rated fitting covers Zone 2, but a Zone 2-rated fitting is not suitable for Zone 1.
