Flow Verification Service

Reviewed by the Daly Middle East technical team — application engineers specialising in ATEX/IECEx hazardous-area lighting and instrumentation.

It can be very difficult for engineers to provide independent flow verification of their systems’ performance to their customers. This could simply be the performance of a flowmeter, a pump, or a complete system or process — and it typically comes up during the handover of a new system, or during maintenance several months or years later.

To help you overcome this challenge, Daly Middle East provides flow verification as a service using the Katronic clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter. In order for us to give you an accurate estimate for this work, we have developed a Pre-Visit checklist to be completed before we provide a formal quotation.

The form can be downloaded here and asks questions about:

  • The pipe specification and properties
  • The media properties
  • The expected range of measurement and readings required

Additionally, any photos of the installation that can be provided will aid in providing an accurate estimate. Once the form is complete, email the form and the photos directly to service@daly-me.com.

Why Independent Flow Verification Matters

A permanently installed flowmeter is only as trustworthy as its last calibration — and in continuous process operations, that can be years out of date without anyone noticing, because the instrument keeps producing a reading regardless of whether that reading is still accurate. Drift, fouling, changes in fluid properties, or a installation issue that was never quite right can all throw off a permanent meter’s output while it continues to look like it’s working normally. Independent verification using a separate, calibrated reference instrument is the only way to confirm what’s actually flowing through the pipe, rather than what the installed system reports.

This matters most at two points in a system’s life: handover, where it protects both the installer and the client by confirming the system performs as specified before sign-off; and periodic maintenance, where it catches drift or fouling before it affects billing, process control, or compliance reporting.

Why Clamp-On Ultrasonic Verification Works Well for This

Clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters like the Katronic range measure flow from outside the pipe wall, using transit-time ultrasonic measurement rather than a wetted sensor. That matters for a verification service specifically because it means no process shutdown, no cutting into the pipe, and no risk of introducing a new leak path or contamination source into a system that’s already running — the meter clamps on, takes a verification reading over an appropriate measurement window, and comes back off. It’s also why a single portable instrument can verify flow across a wide range of pipe sizes and materials on one site visit, rather than needing a different in-line meter for every line being checked.

Preparing for a Flow Verification Visit

The Pre-Visit checklist exists because the accuracy of a clamp-on ultrasonic reading depends heavily on getting the installation details right — pipe material, wall thickness, and lining all affect signal transmission, and the straight pipe run available before and after the measurement point affects how settled the flow profile is at the point of measurement. Providing accurate pipe specifications and photos upfront means a more accurate quotation, and a verification visit that’s more likely to deliver a usable reading on the first attempt.
