Why UV-C Disinfection Suits Mattress Sanitization
Mattresses are a genuinely difficult surface to disinfect with liquid chemical treatments — fabric and foam absorb moisture and residue, treatment needs time to dry before a bed can be used again, and inconsistent chemical coverage on a soft, uneven surface is common. UV-C radiation works differently: it inactivates bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens by damaging their DNA/RNA on contact with the light itself, with no liquid, no residue, and no drying time required — which is exactly why a facility needing fast turnaround between patients or guests benefits from a UV-C approach over chemical disinfection for this specific application.
The practical challenge is coverage and dwell time: UV-C is a line-of-sight disinfectant, meaning it only disinfects surfaces the light actually reaches, so a fixture’s lamp configuration and the operator’s pass pattern over the mattress both affect real-world efficacy. A four-lamp configuration with sufficient output, as used in this project, is specified to provide wider effective coverage per pass than a lower-lamp-count unit, reducing the number of passes — and therefore the total time — needed to treat a full mattress surface.
