Locating non-metallic (PVC, ferro cement) and metallic pipes using acoustics presents a challenge due to the lack of electrical conductivity in plastic and fiber cement pipes. Traditional instruments like the Sewerin UtiliTrac Pipe tracer-locator, which rely on detecting electromagnetic fields, are ineffective in locating these pipes. To address this issue, Sewerin developed the System Combiphon® which utilizes acoustics as the detection principle. This system enables the location and tracing of plastic and non-metallic pipes, providing a solution to the limitations posed by their non-conductive nature.
