Engine Sump Inspection

A standard part of the hourly rounds is to check under the engine for any evidence of leakage or spillage in order to pick up potential problems before they become a critical issue. However it is very common that the machinery spaces are not well lit, particularly where you have large pieces of equipment that shade the space.

One of the rigs we surveyed had a neat solution to this which was to place a small floodlight at the base of each engine so the space was lit and very easy to inspect.

The only issue with this solution was the light selected. The 500 watt halogen floodlights are quite fragile which means when the machinery spaces are being cleaned the lights frequently get knocked or kicked and this often breaks the lamp. The other aspect is that these units get very hot, something you want to avoid, where there could be an oil leak, or a big temptation to lean on them as you crouch to do the inspection.

The solution to this is to use a small form factor LED flood with an elliptical beam pattern so the space is well lit and highly reliable, it carries a full 5 year warranty.
