ABS Emergency Lighting Regulations (2018 Update)

The 2018 update to the ABS MODU regulations has added a requirement at 4-3-3/1.5 to include all equipment operable after emergency shutdown on the hazardous area plan. The excerpt can be found here: Chapter 4-3-3 Section 1.5 and ties in with the below statements regarding emergency lighting and the zone 2 requirement for battery-powered equipment.

In accordance with ABS MODU Part 4-3-5, 7.1.2 all battery powered equipment above deck must have a minimum of a Zone 2 rating regardless of its location. Excerpt here: Chapter 4-3-5 Section 7.1.4

Typically, for emergency lighting this means the following areas (ABS 4-3-2 5.3.1) Excerpt here: Chapter 4-3-2 Section 5.3.1

This includes but is not limited to:

  1. Lifeboat / Life raft deployment areas
  2. Jacobs ladders
  3. Designated Walkways / Stairways & Exits
  4. Control Positions in Machinery Spaces
  5. Drill Floor / BOP
  6. Firefighting / Damage Control Locations
  7. Helideck Access
